  • Rogue builder gone dark

    Dear all,
I have a lone parent who is currently getting nowhere with a half-built driveway.
She employed someone some months ago to re-do the paving on her driveway. Eventually the work was completed and she handed over the money (as she likes to pay promptly). Then she decides to get the builder back because she doesn't like what they've done - and they've swapped out some of the original stones for a different colour. They come back, dig up the pavement and then...they've gone AWOL on the job. We can't get hold of them on the phone or contact them at all. Citizen's Advice Bureau suggested we write a letter, quoting the Consumer Rights Act of 2015 and to see if they agree to an Alternative Dispute Resolution provider. Judging by what another customer has put on Facebook, they'll ignore this written letter. Is there anything else that we can do at all? Many thanks for your time.

If you cannot contact them at all, as you say, why did CAB suggest writing to them?

First thing to do is identify whether it was a limited company or sole trader you were dealing with.
    Then find their address
Then ascertain if they have sufficient assets to refund

When you know that you can decide if it is worth pursuing them and decide if you want them back to complete the job, if you want your money back or if you want them to pay the charges of another outfit to complete the job

      Hi YAYADAH

You normally have to go through CAB to lodge a complaint with Trading Standards, so ask them to do that. Trading Standards may respond directly if they've had previous complaints about this firm (very possible from what you say).

Try writing to them, quote the reference number you've been given, next to it write CAB / TRADING STANDARDS. They shouldn't to difficult to track down, ask former customers, ask locally. They must advertise their services somewhere.

How did your mother find them?
