Parking fine from Smart parking

I received a parking fine from Smart Parking. I have appealed but the fine is being upheld. I either pay a reduced fine of £20 or if I appeal to POPLA I risk having to pay the full fine of £90!
I paid the parking charge of £1 which allowed 1 hour parking I returned to my car within 35 minutes. So I was surprised to get the fine. I also still have my parking ticket as evidence. Smart parking claim the reason for the fine is because I didn't put in the correct car registration number into their machine. They are claiming I only put in the first two letters. This is completely wrong why would I do that? If I'd missed out a letter or number I'd understand but nearly the whole number? I don't think so! I presume there is a problem with their machine.

Does the ticket have your full registration? Do the know who the driver was, simple yes or no?

It's not a fine, it's a charge for an alleged breach of contract.

Can you put up photos of the signs and any instructions of the payment machine?

To be honest, and I hate saying it, I would pay the £20 to save all the hassle.
