  • 12 hour night shift - breech of WTR?

For the couple of years I've been working a 12 hour night shift, 5 days a week. I'm contracted to do 8 hours, but I voluntarily do 4 hours overtime.

This has taken a huge toll on my mental and physical health. I've been suffering from depression and I have absolutely no energy.

I believe my employer has been in breech of the WTR, but I cannot afford not to work the overtime. If I were to make a complaint would it be possible to claim compensation? Would this compensation be significant enough to offset the overtime I would lose?

Can you confirm firstly what job you do please?

Also if you knew that you should not work more than 8 hours on average during a night shift why did you agree to voluntarily work excess hours by way of working overtime?
