  • Can I erect a sign on our private layby?

We have a layby that we personally constructed. Permission was granted to remove our hedge, etc and relocate the field gate that was on road edge to further up the track the aim being –
    (a) to enable a better vision to come out of our track onto the road
    (b) when arriving with e.g. large vehicle there was room to park off road before opening gate.
Over the years our private ‘layby’ has been adopted as somewhere for vehicles to park. (This is on a small village so no public car parks) Even more so now with people thinking they can park there to then go on their walks.
    Your thoughts appreciated.

Ask the council directly by email or letter. Then you will have a paper trail.

but will a sign actually persuade people not to park there?

How many years has the layby been there? Is there a possibility it might be viewed as part of the public highway?

Yes - we have had it there for maybe 13 plus years - can check. As we have record of permission being granted to remove our hedge, etc. If it was viewed as part of public highway then I guess it we should be contacting council.... thank you to both of you for your thoughts.

Get the notice up immediately. State that it is private property and not adopted. I would put up chains and close it off a few days a year. Take proof photos to show you have done it. This resets the privacy. I know of a road near dunstable which is used but crosses private land. It is gated and the gates are shut for a few dYs each year.

Perhaps invest in a tin of hard wearing yellow paint for road and kerbside?
