Pre-payment meter using £10 a day!!??

I just moved to a new property that has this pre-paid meter. I noticed it has been eating my money, I don't use up to £10 a day. I called the supplier, they told me it is because it has debt. But how come? When I first inserted the key, it said the debt was £5-ish. Okay, paid it, but what is happening now is ridiculous, I am devastated.
Did anyone encounter this?

I have seen this before. The previous occupiers have probably run-up a sizeable debt and the power supplier has insisted on a pre-payment meter. It has been 'turned-up" to clear the existing debt and the ongoing usage. You need to contact the supplier and tell them move-in date so they can remove the 'old debt' part of the charges and re-set the meter.

Also start taking daily readings from the meter so you have a very detailed record of your usage.
