  • Councils legal right to request addresses where homeless resided

    Hello everyone.

Re: Does a council have a legal right to request names & address where a sofa surfer has resided.

I write today in brief to ask if a council has any legal power to force request names and addresses, to whom a person has been sofa surfing while waiting to obtain a social housing.

The social housing is about to be viewed in the tomorrow, so the homeless person is about to get their home, however one of the prerequisite of the council is that names of people and addresses be furnished to them a roof over their head while sofa surfing. Some of those people whom have offered sanctuary to the person that is homeless, do not feel they wish to have their names and address given to the council, not because something has been done wrong as anyone can have a visitor in their home stay over, I guess the question would be for what duration would be considered reasonable, and is there any reference to this.

Is there any legal person here that can confirm is the council have any legal right to request such data from the person that is desperately in need for a home.

    Many thanks

I believe that to qualify for housing in a Local Authority you may need :to have a local connection through living in the area for a minimum time,
This might be the reason for the request.
