  • Debt Collectors

Hi I am a 74 yr old disabled lady who walked out her husband January this year (2020) without anything but just a few clothes. I am renting a purpose built bungalow for people with mobility problems (I am in a wheelchair) without leaving my address as I don't want any contact from him. The house was very unsafe to live in and I could not cope. This last month I have received letters from 2 different debt collectors chasing old debts one back to 2004 which I cant remember. They were in my name but were actually my husband's borrowing and he has passed these debts back to the collectors to chase me. Probably out of spite. He is still working and also has a fabulous pension from BT, he has the house and savings in the bank. I have nothing but don't know what I can do about the threat of bailiffs coming. Would they really chase after me and take the few items that I have?
    Thank you for any advice

There will be no bailiffs if it has not been to court. You write to the debt collectors telling them that the debt is statute barred. There is a template in the "Shortcuts " panel on the right of the page or at the bottom if you are on a phone.
