Hi,
My mum has been working for a company that provides cleaning services to schools. They only work during term times, so around 42 weeks a year. Her pay is minimum wage (£8.72) and according to her contract, this comes down to £7.77 after three months, to make up for time when there is no work.
It sounds a bit weird to me, as she didn’t have any choice regarding this. I understand that they may think it helps people to have steady income throughout the year but it’s not that great in practice.. if someone wants to save up to have money when they’re off, that’s up to them, someone else might choose to work somewhere else during these periods.
but to summarise, my question is, what’s legal point about this? Can they even do this? To me it’s very dodgy as I don’t even know how they calculated it. it also seems that the employees don’t feel they can request holidays. Can someone advise please?
