Redundancies

The company I work for is currently proposing to get rid of a particular grade by making everyone in the grade redundant and then creating a new position with the same Title,pay, roles and responsibilities and job description and making everyone who wants to stay go through an application process to reapply for their jobs.

i was wondering if it is allowed for the company to get rid of the position and make redundancies only to replace it with what is effectively the same job.

Are they carrying out this process as part of a restructuring of the business?
