Since being told of a legacy on the death of an old friend 7 years ago, the executor has had a string of reasons not to release any funds. A law suit on the property, selling the flat, personal crises etc. The executor won't give her address (it is all by email). And now she is not answering emails at all. What should my sister (the beneficiary) do? She is hard up and the legacy small (£10,000). She can't afford a law suit. And needs every penny. Advice welcome!

Start by obtaining a copy of the grant of probate.
It costs£1.50 here: https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate and will contain the name and address of the executor.
Your sister can then start applying pressure

Thanks Des8. Helpful. So I've looked just now. No record of probate for his name and year of death. (But there is a death certificate, and we have letters from his ececutor saying a) that he left the legacy and b) that she would not use a solicitor.) So I guess this means probate is not granted yet?

If the testator died 7 years ago one would expect probate to have been applied for and granted by now.
If the testator owned the flat probate would be required to enable it to be sold.
You need to trace the address of the executor.
Has anyone just typed the name into Google to see what comes up?
