Can someone put bills in my name after I left?

I was living in a shared house with one other person for 5 months.
all electric bills were in his name and every time I asked to pay my share he avoided the question ending up in him racking up a big bill. I tried to call the supplier and pay but I couldn’t as I had no account information.
Now I have moved out he is demanding that I pay most of the bill and threatening to ring the supplier and prove that I was living there at the time to be put on the account- can this happen?

Bill was in his name so his problem.

To be fair ask for a copy of the bill covering the period you were there and pay 50% of that.

Did you have a written agreement with him?

No written agreement- does that change anything?
More than happy to pay half, just don’t want to get swindled for it all!
