Hi,*
I am a Tier 4 student who is currently residing in the UK. Since moving here two years ago, I picked up a part-time job at a maximum of 20 hours week, as per my Visa rules. After the whole COVID situation, my employer asked me for my NI number for furloughed pay purposes, and I realised I don't have one, nor do I recall applying for one.*
My employer never told me about applying for a NI number, and if I'm honest, it has never come up in any discussions outside of work. My payslips either have no income tax or NI paid, but some payslips have NI contributions with no income tax. This made me very confused - how am I paying national insurance without a number? There isn't any number on my payslips or my biometric card. However, these seem really small to me.
To be honest, I had no idea about any of this and assumed it would have been done as part of my immigration and/or biometric card. I'm really freaking out now that I've not paid tax and I'm going to end up severely fined or worse simply because I wasn't told about this at any point.*
