Paid bill but bailiff wanted more

I had a bill of £3725 which I owed to a building merchants
They sent a bailiff round to collect the money which I told them I couldn’t pay till end of the month.
I got a phone call from the building merchants a month later asking for payment so I paid them.
The day later I got a call from the bailiff telling me I had to pay , I told him I’d paid he asked for proof so I told him to contact the company who I’d paid his response was don’t get cocky.

2 weeks later he turned up demanding £2980
then changed it to £2480 for some reason,we had a standoff for 3hrs
He said he was taking my work van and hit a tow truck
He blocked my drive stopping my wife going to the doctors who is off work with mental problems which caused her to Pay it because she was so emotional and upset
surely this can’t be right

We need to go back a little bit. Had you been taken to Court and a CCJ obtained against you? If so was this CCJ transferred up to become a High Court Writ? Where was the Bailiff from?

There will be some more questions but we'll just start with the basics for now, reason being we need to establish how it all happened.
