Hello!
I will try to be quick as I suspect most of you have heard this exact story before.*I tried to steal some items by peeling off the stickers/barcodes. I regretted my actions immediately and dropped the items, then tried to leave the store. I did NOT leave with any of the items. I was then stopped and brought to the back. They told me that I wouldn't be charged because the items were so inexpensive (6 pounds in total), they wouldn't call the police, wouldn't issue me a fine. They just told me that I am banned from all of those stores. Later, I called to ask if I had been given a caution and the store manager said no, but that I may be given a fine (please not that she did not tell me this when I was in the store). In the phone call she basically told me to stop worrying and that it was done, so just don't do it again and no one has to know.
My only concern is the fact that while they did get back all of the items I took, they don't have the stickers on them anymore (I crinkled them up) and the store manager said she can't sell them anymore. Because of that, I assume that is damage to property/I have actually caused them a loss, therefore I actually am liable to a fine.
I am an international and will likely be leaving the country very soon because of the coronavirus, so I won't even be here to receive the letters. Furthermore, I REALLY cannot afford to have this on my record and I DEFINITELY can't go to court.
What do I do? My main issue is the fact that, unlike a lot of the other posts on this forum, I actually did cause the store to suffer a loss.
