Hi. I have been with my employers for almost 3 years. When I joined the business I had little experience of the role that I do but am now fully qualified and am performing my job as per my job description. I have evidence to confirm that my performance in my job is of good quality.
there is a gentleman in my team who has been there longer than me, but performs the exact same job as me.*
We have recently been offered payrises, but my offer is less than his offer. I had queried this, asking what difference there is between me and this gentleman (I am female) other than length of service. I have shown that I do the same job as this man, to the same standard and have the exact same qualifications as him. I do the same hours, do the same (if not more) travel and my rates of work are actually higher than his.
The person who is making the decision was not aware of what I actually do and couldn’t really answer the question as to why my offer was different, other than the fact that when I joined the business I wasn’t qualified and had a different professional background than the man.
instead, the person making the decision asked me why I had “refused” to sign a particular document (not related to the role I carry out) and told me I had had “bad press” because of my failure to sign this document.
Having given an explanation, I asked why this was relevant to the decision to offer me less money, and again asked for the differences between me and this man. I am still waiting for an explanation and have been told they are looking into it.
since this meeting, my employer has recruited another man into our department to perform the same job as me. He doesn’t have the same qualifications as I do, nor does he have the same experience as me, but have learnt that he is being paid just £500 less than the pay rise they have offered me. I am not sure what I should do about this new I formation and I am not sure whether this is enough for a case. BUT, in addition to this, I have been passed over for opportunities within my department whilst all of the men in the team have been offered these opportunities. If anyone can offer advice, it would be much appreciated. I love my job and do not want to leave.
