  • ‘Solicitor Letter’ on behalf of dodgy client

Hi Guys, I’ve received a letter from a solicitor company called AM Strachan, the person who wrote the letter Has made a number of spelling mistakes including their clients address.*
The debt they are chasing is invalid and nothing to do with me, any idea how to respond?*

AM Strachan is a registered law firm, you can check registered firms and qualfied solicitors on the Law Society's find a solicitor database and input the firm's SRA number - https://solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk/?Pro=True

You can respond by telling them the debt is invalid?

We can't help you much because we know nothing about the alleged debt, why you believe it's invalid and we haven't seen the contents of the letter. If you are going to give limited information, then I'm afraid all you will get is a limited response with a generic answer.

If you have a question about the voluntary termination process, please read this guide first, as it should have all the answers you need. Please do not hijack another person's thread as I will not respond to you

Hi Rob, thanks for reply, they are alleging I bid on an item during live/online auction and won it however did not pick up the item or pay for it therefore they're trying to bill me 80k or something along those lines... I've never used an online auction and do not know how they got my details - they said the account was verified via email and phone number... whole thing just seems suspect..

I appreciate the spelling errors make the whole thing suspect. After all, solicitors tend to be literate. However, given the amount of money involved, I don’t think you can just write it off as a prank. *Personally, I would engage with them, tell them that it is nothing to do with you and ask them to provide the evidence that they are relying on. That puts the ball back in their court, and there’s a fair chance that you will never hear from them again.

I’'d just add that relying on phone and email to verify the identity of someone allegedly entering into an £80k contract is pretty unusual.

Hi 2222, thanks for reply. They just sent me screenshots of bidding activity of an account that is supposedly linked to my name/address... I'm on the fence about replying to the company as their reputation is sketchy...

It’s the link to your name and address that they need to provide evidence of.

i see you have two threads running on the same subject, and others have suggested doing nothing.*
