  • Private car buyer legal threat

    Hi, any advice gratefully received.
I recently privately sold a car that had an oil leak. It was fully disclosed in the advert and discussed with the buyer. Other than age related wear and tear there was nothing else wrong with the car as far as I know.
He later contacted me saying the leak was really bad and he wanted a refund. I agreed as it was only a few hours after I sold it, but he then said he was seeing a mechanic and would be able to tell if I'd just bodged the car up to sell it. He then messaged saying he's seeing a solicitor and phoning the police due to it being unroadworthy. He's never mentioned the refund again. I'm fairly certain he's just trying to scam me out of money for repairs. Can anyone advise what will happen if he does contact the police and / or take me to court? I have evidence that I disclosed the leak and he acknowledged he knew about it. He did inspect and test drive the car too.

Caveat Emptor... Buyer beware. You pointed out the defect, he examined he bought, end of.
