  • ESA and self-employment expenses

I have been on income-based ESA and HB for a couple of years as I am recovering from serious illness. I am still very weak and unable to do very much, although it is likely I will get better eventually.

I am registered with HMRC as a self-employed artist, even though I am not doing any work of any kind whilst ill. But I still get bills for insurance, union membership and keeping my website up.

Can I still claim these expenses on my annual return, even though I am not actually working until I am fully recovered ?
