Your point re. inheritance tax is also well made. Yes, there would be a liability and No, I had not thought of that. Inheritance tax was paid on the original estate amount of £ so anything extra would also imply a liability, so a corrective account would be needed.
Talking to family members here the view is just to write the sum off. Your reply and the replies of others here on the forum have informed that view.
