Hi can someone help me here please, MAY last year I agreed to sell my boat in Greece to a chap for £7,500, he gave me £1000, deposit to that show that he was interested, and to do an inspection, we then both went to Greece, I took him to the boatyard where he inspected the boat and we then had it launched so that we could do a sea trial, he was satisfied and gave me a further £2,000, saying that he would give me the rest when we returned to the UK, after many phone calls to him he still did not give me the balance, instead returning to Greece that summer with his family and used the boat without my permission and without paying for it, he then put my boat in part exchange for another boat, I have tried many times to contact him since but to no avail, also I have spoken to the company in Greece that did the deal, and they confirmed the transaction but have told me to sort it out with him, now I have no boat and am still owed £4500, can anyone advise me please, its not a large amount of money I know but I am not wealthy and do not want to throw good money after bad the boat is British registered, many thanks in anticipation....Ray.

He stole your boat and sold it. Tell the Police, and claim on your insurance.

I have no idea of Greek law, but in the UK the boatyard who bought it would not have good title.

You should speak to a lawyer in Greece, or ask on a Greek version of a forum like this.

Both parties are U.K. resident and just the boat was in Greece?

If you have his (confirmed) address then send him a letter before action for the outstanding monies owed for the boat with a view to putting a small claim through the court. There is still no guarantee you would actually obtain payment but you'd at least have more options to enforce the debt than just trying to get hold of him to ask for it.

Anything at all in writing between the two of you ?

We do not have a written agreement because obviously I was waiting for full payment before I drafted a bill of sale to him.
