  • Hello! PNC issue.

    Good evening all!

Im hoping somebody may be able to offer a bit of advice.

I’m currently going through family court and as such, recently had my telephone interview with CAFCASS. During the interview I was asked about my criminal record. I stated that I didn’t have one, nor had I ever been arrested. Although I did have an harassment warning relating to the family court matter.

The lady conducting the interview informed me that this was incorrect and that I actually had seven convictions. The latest being in 2016. She gave details and asked who I had done this crime against. I reiterated that there must be a mix up as I had no criminal record. She asked me about further convictions and appearances in court. Again, informed her that it wasnt me. She asked if I was born somewhere to which I replied no. She said she would double check the PNC.

I heard back a week later saying that it was definitely me on the PNC, had my address and previous address, along with a couple of other addresses (which weren’t mine). If I disputed this, I would have to attend a police station for finger prints and DNA.

Upon doing so, I was told this wasn’t how it worked and I would have to submit an information request. I did this and had an email back asking me to confirm where I lived between certain dates. Provided this. Then had an email saying they couldn’t provide the information as there was a “close match” and I was disputing convictions which may not belong to me. I was told to again attend a police station for fingerprints, so that I can be “eliminated”.

I’ll be going into the police station on Monday for this, but I’m not sure what will happen then? I’m obviously certain that it will confirm there’s been a mix up. But how long to have this resolved and how do I go about this?

Im in family court again on Thursday and CAFCASS have already told me they’ll have to send this information to the judge because of safeguarding issues relating to the convictions. I’m worried it won’t be sorted by then and contact will be stopped because of this mix up.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hi and welcome.
It shouldn't take the police very long to discover from your fingerprints.you have no convictions

Anyone who has been convicted of an offence have their prints stored on a database (IDENT1)
The police are now being equipped with handheld scanners that can crawl through the database in minutes whilst they are out on the streets.
I think that system was rolled out in Yorkshire at the beginning of the year and will gradually spread throughout the UK.
I can't see why there should be any delay if your prints are scanned in the police station

    Good luck
