Sorry, but more questions than answers
Were the hire company aware that the car was to be driven by a person other than the hirer?
What sort of pressure was put on your friend to hire the car?
What has been the police response?

Hire company was not aware another person was driving and there was a lot of threatening pressure police took discription over phone and short statement as car still not been found as yet (not that he’s aware of) and he’s awaiting visit from police x

So if the car is not recovered the hire company will doubtlessly pursue the hirer for allowing an uninsured unapproved access to the vehicle.
Hire contracts are quite water tight and they will be looking to recover all their losses.
Suggest he cooperates fully with the police to help them recover the vehicle, altho' as he could be prosecuted for allowing an uninsured person to drive the car he might benefit from having his solicitor present. If he does not have a solicitor he could request the presence of the duty solicitor if he is interviewed at the police station
