  • Training clawback

Hi - I have question about training clawback costs.

I took a new job for which I was sent on some training courses amounting to 4000GBP, I gave written consent to their clawback terms,

I'm thinking about leaving, which according to the terms means I'm liable for all the training costs. I don't dispute this. My question concerns how the money will be clawed back. I understand it will come out of my final month's salary, which brings me to my first question:

Q1 - will the training costs be deducted post-tax or pre-tax?

The next question concerns the consequences of leaving having not paid the full amount. My monthly salary is about 50% of the training costs. So:

Q2 - how will the remaining costs be recovered and what would be the consequences if they are not paid?

    Thanks for reading!

    Re: Training clawback

I presume that in the claw-back terms there was no detail of how this would actually operate if you left the company and the final salary did not cover the repayment due.

If that is the case then you will need to speak to your company about what they will do in this event and I would consider in advance of this working out a repayment schedule that you can suggest to them.

The deduction will be taken out of gross pay in the same way as your tax and NI is.

If you do not pay the remaining costs then the company can make ultimately pursue a court claim against you for payment of the outstanding balance.
