  • Hi everyone , HMRC safe penalty appeal help please ?

Hi everyone , unsure of which forum to put this sorry !

brief description: in August I received a letter stating we owed in excess of £5500 for paid child benefit that was e shouldn't have received due to my husbands wages being in excess of £50-60k

we were unaware of this and are in the process of paying the amount back and are aware of a further £1700 that is coming for a self assessment that we have now completed for 2016-2017 ( now we know we have to)
child benefit we have stopped as soon as s we received the letter and are not disputing the amount . It is however frustrating that they then charge you £847 as a safe penalty fine for not informing them for over three years something which we couldn't do if we were not aware we shouldn't be inreceipt of it .
i would like to appeal the penalty .
can anyone point me in the direction of a template letter please ?

    many thanks in advance

    😁

    Hi
Not sure about your circumstances but you can ask for the charges to be reduced once you enter into a payment plan but there are no promises HMRC will accept this .
As I have painfully found out you are responsible for your own Tax afairs and it us up to you to make sure they are correct and SA forms are filled in yearly if applicable everyone has to pay some of there child benefit back if they are earn in excess of 50k and if it's over 60k you pay all of it back ,not sure how you didn't realise it's been clawed back by HMRC since 2013 if you didn't set up an online account they would normally send you a SA form to fill in .
Hope this helps there is nothing wrong with just writing to the SA arm of HMRC they can only say yes or no good luck
