That is a perfectly valid point. It actually improves stability more than speed but there is a performance benefit too. We had a client recently whose forum header graphic was hosted externally and it increased their site loading time by nearly a second per page but this is probably the exception rather than the rule!

Just ran a speed test through GTMetrix on my previous post, then added 5 internal animated smilies, re ran test, removed smilies again, retested. Results below

No smilies
Page load time: 3.34s
Total page size: 216KB
Total number of requests: 23

After adding 5 animated smilies
Page load time: 13.09s
Total page size: 235KB
Total number of requests: 23

After removing smilies again
Page load time: 3.35s
Total page size: 216KB
Total number of requests: 23

Yep, the main page will still load the same, but it takes longer to load all the bells and whistles, we already know the news feed and twitter sidebar take an age to load, but theyre here to stay. May be time to reduce/compress the smilies or reposition the image files to optimise loading.

This can happen if your shift key is down (or the computer thinks it is)! What browser are you using?

that is rather more dramatic a result than I would have expected. Are you sure there isn't something else going on?
