  • Free Transport to Denominational Schools

I received a letter from school yesterday. Just interested me in the way the County Council had worded the options.

    This is the current policy in line with government guidelines;

    Transport to faith schools
Parents choosing a voluntary aided faith school on religious grounds may be eligible to receive assistance with transport if the chosen school is the normal area voluntary school (in most cases the nearest voluntary school) and the school is outside the walking distance as explained above.
In addition, in the case of Catholic schools, only Roman Catholic baptised children are eligible to receive assistance with travel. In all such requests baptismal certificates are required as necessary evidence.

This is bits of the letter - handed out at the junior school which is non denominational.

To keep council tax as low as possible the council has to make savings of £7m.......................... To reduce what we spend on transport to religious schools we are asking people whether or not to charge some parents that choose to send their children to schools because of their religious belief. Please tick one of the following options.

    1) No change - keep things as they are so that many faith children get free transport.

    2) Introduce charges immediately for transport to religious schools

    3) Phase in charges which will protect those curretnly getting free transport to religious schools.

Theres no further information on the charges.

If you go to look for the information they are wanting to bring in a fee of approx £400 a year against a cost per pupil of £995.

Anyway - just wondered if any one had any opinions.

Anyway reading between the lines and making some asumptions

asumming the walking distance is 3 miles (ir was when i went school)

If the school is over this distance they get free/reduced travel costs

If a catholic school is 4 miles away, only catholic children will be entitled to the subsidy as non catholic children could opt for a nearer school.

My opionion is that you cant have one rule for one and another for others, either all puils get the enetitlement or none.

When i choose a school it was based of the quality of the school, I choose a Catholic school as one of my choices as all the local ones were crap at the time.

I can see a big storm kicking off over this and am surprised it hasnt already on the grounds of religious equality.

Aye thats pretty much what I thought. I wonder if other councils are doing similar.

And no in the letter handed out there is NO mention of how far away the school has to be to qualify for the free transport. In fact they do say that they have no intention of changing the rules for children who have to travel to the nearest school cause its ''too far away'' ONLY changing the rules for people who chose to go to a school further away on religious grounds.
