Re: Windows 10

basa48 This is what you have to put up with, with any MS package. Then again if you have an android phone with apps on, you will be used to updates.

There have been quite a lot of updates with Win 10 since its inception, just as there were with other versions of windows. The problem was with Vista those updates never did the job properly, and just as with other versions of Windows, I would expect things to get broken then work again.

You could always use Linux and choose when to update

When I tried to do the windows 10 update it told me I needed the product key, the laptop came with win7 pre installed, where do I find the key?

How did you do the update? If you are upgrading from within windows 7, it will use the windows 7 key. If you are doing a fresh install, then you will need a windows 10 product key.

Re: Windows 10

As long as you used the 'upgrade this PC now' option on the laptop you want to upgrade, then it should not be asking for a key. I've used this tool on 3 laptops this week (both windows 7 & 8) without issues.

Hate to ask this, but you say that windows 7 was preinstalled. Is there any possibility that it is not a genuine copy? Do you have a product key sticker underneath?

Re: Windows 10

There are a few programs around that you can use to recover your key.
Here are 2, but you may find others. The key is also stored in your registry, but finding and translating the code is more convoluted.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

On Pre-installed laptops, the product key label can either be stuck on the bottom of the computer, or be inside of the battery compartment.

and try installing ClassicShell - you can make you Win10 look like another version of windows.

I hate the look Of Win8 and use this to make it look like Win7

Thank you everyone. I installed Win10 with no problem last night, managed to get the key but didn't need it.
Crazy thing is, they print the key on a sticker on the bottom of a laptop that by its nature gets moved a lot-the number had worn off

Had a " play" with some laptops at a certain larger store, it looks ok.
So have reserved it and the form says that the PC is compatable.
Still a bit worried that my connection may be a bit slow but will see what happens, will let you know!

I tried, I really did! Took most of last night and this morning to get as far as 95% then got an error message with a code but the code wasn't on the list! Computer then went into a loop again trying to download it again, got the same message!
Had to do an emergency stop to stop it ( hope that makes sense!).
Guess who is not going to try again!

W10 has wiped or whatever technical term should be used my HP wireless officejet 4500 D10 All in one printer driver (s) HP online solutions lists the printer and has a driver to download having done this and having had a " test page" printed out after an " extra data" download supposedly to enable the use with W10 Open Office and MS office bring up alerts, " unable to start printer, please configure printer and try again", the download showed a " configuring printer" notice and "completed" closed down the computer and then restarted but no printing seems to have been enabled.

I would be grateful for any insights please.

HP 4500 has always been a poor machine with terrible drivers.
My Brother printer broke down after years of good service and a friend gave me a 4500, as he had relegated it to the garage, after many failed attempts to get it running properly over WiFi. He just went out and bought another for £50, needless to say a different make.

I tried to get it running over WiFi and it just won't have it, eventually I just connected it up via USB, not the ideal situation as my last was a network printer.

As far as drivers are concerned, you should completely remove any old drivers, before putting updated drivers on. Many companies have a nasty habit of changing some files, which my not get overwritten when you update to newer drivers, because they have the same name.

Alternatively, ditch the rubbish HP and get something decent.

lol just shows you how lax people are wit their computers security.

It doesn't bode well for any information when an O.S can access it at will without the owners consent, no matter how benign the developers think it is. Rather bad for security.

Then again, it is one of the reasons MicroSoft systems get hacked so often.

Never had a single problem until W10, good quality print, not heavy on ink and bloody good fax which I have to have for some matters.
I guess it's a call to HP on Monday.
