  • Supermarket fruit and Veg v. Farm Shop fruit and veg

I've kinda been looking at this, partly cos of a conversation at work and partly cos I am going to a National Trust place that has a farm(part of the free weekend coming up--see National Trust for details ).
I know a dispatches program said that it was cheaper but has anyone actually changed from Supermarket to Farm Shop and what is the real difference between the two of them?

Precisely for that reason! By not using pesticides and other chemicals, yields of organic produce are generally lower than those of fruit and veg grown using conventional farming methods, hence the higher cost.

Farm shops sell local produce while a lot of supermarket produce comes from abroad. Not all farm shop produce is organically grown and supermarkets do sell organic produce. Both have pros and cons: supermarkets sell a much wider range of fruit and veg year round. You can't buy locally grown mangoes or bananas because they don't grow in this cold climate, however, some farm shops don't just sell their own stuff. Locally grown produce will always be fresher, it wouldn't have spent weeks k
in warehouses and containers. At certain times of the year you can also try pick your own farms.

At a Farm Shop, one may be certain that meat labelled as beef did not fall in the Grand National.

I've also started buying our meat from local butchers or farm shops rather than in the supermarkets, plus as I bring a lunch to work each day so I tend buy vegetarian mince, chicken style pieces etc.

I buy all ours from Tesco, to be honest I have better things to do with my Saturday afternoons than picking out the under ripe spuds with the green welly brigade.

I think both have their merits, as do local shops (butchers, greengrocers etc). My local supermarket has a range of fruit and vegetables that far outstrips even out large Asian greengrocers nearby, and as an inveterate "trier of something new" this is really useful. Some farm shops are really good - but you also have to be aware that many farmshops do not necessarily source their own or locally grown produce! I recall as a child going to farm shops - but you bought what was in season and the farm only sold what they produced. The fact is that if you consider the range of produce, and the period over which it is available, there is no way that they are anything other than a retail business like any other.

I too have often found farm shops to be nothing of the sort, much of the produce being bought-in, often from overseas.
