Eloise - Unreserved apologies if anything I have said has caused you pain. It was not meant that way. The difficulty is, maybe, that as you can really dish it out, people automatically assume you can take it. Sorry - got it badly wrong - and never meant to hurt you xxxxx

I apologise unreservedly. I was trying to make a light hearted point . I like or dislike "The French" as much as I like or dislike any nationality.
Actually I think the world has gone mad when you can not make jokes about another group of people. I make many a joke often to provoke a response for example I hate all DM readers (my mother and a good friend actually read/worked for them)
I will stand in a room full of women and make a sexist joke when I am the only man, they know I do not mean it.
I make anti gay jokes to people who know I am gay, the list goes on.
There is a Iranian comedienne who makes the funniest jokes about Islamic culture

Eloise the other thing you forget is the anti British comments that you get all over the world, In Warsaw at the holocaust museum there are anti british comments, In Athens at the Acropolis Museum there are anti British comments although quite frankly the Elgin Marbles may well have been destroyed if they hadn't been removed. Oddly enough I did not find any anti British comments in Germany

There are of course, cultural differences between the English and the French...

Further, could the French be viewed as racist because they dislike our wine or cheese?
But at the end of the day they have never forgiven us for Agincourt!

This thread has gone totally off topic because of some members imaginary slights.
            Ridiculous.

In attempt to try to get the thread back on topic, I post the following:
In Britain there are people – who feel completely revolted by the very idea of eating a horse. It simply isn’t the done thing in Britain and most of the English-speaking world. It’s so far beyond ‘not the done thing’ that it’s verging on taboo.

Legend has it that the French tradition of horse consumption dates from the Battle of Elyoa in 1807, when officers encouraged starving troops to eat their dead battle horses to ease their hunger. Horse meat was roasted on cavalry breastplates in the middle of a devastated battlefield. There’s also evidence that Napoleon’s surgeon general, a man called Baron Dominic-Jean Larrey encouraged the eating of horse meat among troops as a way of avoiding scurvy. The troops got a taste for it, and the practice continued.

At the end of the day, if you want to eat horse it's up to you. But my position remains the same in that I would NOT, ever.

This may sound strange but the above in bold is a word for word piece which may have been lifted from somewhere else on a piece that is written about eating horsemeat. I am assuming that your quote is from a difference piece written nearer to today's date but with an opposing view but I thought it was slightly strange that part of the on topic post was a direct quote from something else without reference(when I was a student they called that plagiarism ).

The entire piece, written prior to the Horsemeat scandal is here: http://www.them-apples.co.uk/2011/08...ses-dont-they/

For those of you lot that know me you know that if there's an unquoted source, I can smell it a mile away and hunt it down

If you want the thread closed then you can ask site team. I did ask them to shut the other joke thread as that went of topic as well :flypig:
