MissFM There really was no indication that it was intended as a joke. It was in answer to a question and appeared to say yes our continental cousins were inferior. No mention of the French just a continent. Of course people should be allowed free speech but if others find it unacceptable then it is their right to express that. Sometimes it is hard to stand up for what you believe in . I have no issue with ACs opinion on eating horse I just disagree. My issue was with other comments

Totally agree. There was no indication at all that the word was meant in jest. And besides which, saying something "in jest" does not make it right or acceptable. There is no such thing as free speech - free speech is curtailed by the rights of others. I personally find it offensive to say that anyone who eats hosremeat is not "decent". Their moral values and eating habits are their own business, and not a basis upon which to pass judgement. AngryCat can eat whatever she wants, and can hold any views she wants about why she should or should not eat particular items. It is going too far to pass judgement on others for exercising the same right.

Well... I was prevented from even reading this thread after I expressed an unacceptable opinion - then was prevented from posting - even from expressing thanks ("You do not have permission to press this button" etc). I dare say this will happen again but I do hope not.

that is to do with Admin rather than any other VIP people so cannot see why your input is not wanted on here.

I am sorry but I have no idea what you are talking about, or how this relates to the matter under discussion.

It relates because discussion is suppressed if any but a certain viewpoint is suppressed

The issue with either not being able to post on the thread or not being able to view the thread are Admin/site issues since no VIP member or non VIP member has the tools to prevent you from viewing/participating in the thread. If that has happened then Celestine et al should be made aware of any such issues so that if there is a bug in the system that it can be resolved quickly and promptly.

                  Quite so!

Interesting how this thread has now gone totally off topic...!

Are we now discussing racism and horse racing?

Seems like some on here have got their knickers in a twist...calm down dears LOL.

If, you had bothered to read the post made by gravytrain: post#179, you would have noted that the smiley face!
It was very clear to me that this indicated a tongue in cheek comment. Thus, it was quite clear as to the meaning.

Absolutely Ridiculous, some people on here have jumped completely to the wrong conclusion.
What a waste of time and what a STORM IN A TEA CUP!

                      AC rolls eyes...astonished.

Being mischeivous (and to see whether I'm allowed to post lol) - would it have been alright then if it were JUST the French?

I am no doubt no match for you in arguing a case however I have wrestled with myself over the concept of free speech and should it be ok for others to express whatever opinion they wanted. I used to feel that so long as it did not promote violence etc it was ok otherwise it should be banned, but then I realised that (I hope) the majority of people are reasonable people and that the outlandish views of some (not on this thread) can only be defeated if they are allowed to be expressed and argued. If we suppress free speech then we are on the slippery slope to thought police etc. If reasonable people had not been terrorised into silence in Germany between the wars then maybe, just maybe we would be in a different world today

One point that Salmon man said which relates directly to that, of course we can voice opinions on other peoples morals. If in my moral code it is perfectly ok to kill another human being for no reason, would you accept that?

AC we will have to agree to differ as to how obvious or not your comment was however I am taking you last post as an apology.

However it is never wrong to point out flaws in arguments or refute allegations. It appears to me that you feel yourself the injured party, well all I can suggest is that in future when cracking a joke you use either lol or the smilies to help get your point accross

In answer to Miss FM yes of course, after all we all hate the French:tape:

Most certainly not an apology, as I have nothing to apologise for!

There are of course, cultural differences between the English and the French...

Further, could the French be viewed as racist because they dislike our wine or cheese?
But at the end of the day they have never forgiven us for Agincourt!

This thread has gone totally off topic because of some members imaginary slights.
                              Ridiculous.

In attempt to try to get the thread back on topic, I post the following:
In Britain there are people – who feel completely revolted by the very idea of eating a horse. It simply isn’t the done thing in Britain and most of the English-speaking world. It’s so far beyond ‘not the done thing’ that it’s verging on taboo.

Legend has it that the French tradition of horse consumption dates from the Battle of Elyoa in 1807, when officers encouraged starving troops to eat their dead battle horses to ease their hunger. Horse meat was roasted on cavalry breastplates in the middle of a devastated battlefield. There’s also evidence that Napoleon’s surgeon general, a man called Baron Dominic-Jean Larrey encouraged the eating of horse meat among troops as a way of avoiding scurvy. The troops got a taste for it, and the practice continued.

At the end of the day, if you want to eat horse it's up to you. But my position remains the same in that I would NOT, ever.
