  • F.A.O dog owners

Just heard that in this bad weather the councils are understandably gritting the roads. What they are not disclosing is the grit has anti freeze in it.

Great idea, until you think of our 4 legged companions!

This anti freeze is deadly to animals, please rinse off your dogs feet (and the cat if she goes out) after a walk. Lets keep our best friends safe, and keep safe ourselves.

Didn't know that Puffalumps so great advice. Sadly,,my beasts have decided that their paws are far too saintly to be adorned with snow so Himself has de-snowed the ex veg patch which is jumping distance from the back door so they can do their ablutions quickly and get back in the warm. Patch doesn't go out since his accident so has a litter box and INCA is FAR too up herself to go out,,so she has a litterbox too!! No reason why she can't go out,,she just chooses not to!!!

My cat will go into the garden but she gives you dirty looks like you may remove this white stuff now !

lu shakes her feet shakes her feet like a cat, and amber buries her nose in it and makes a bow wave of snow on her nose and charges Lu!!

Why should road grit contain diethylene glycol as "antifreeze", when rock salt is at least as effective in lowering the freezing point of water whilst also being considerably less expensive?

Excellent post Puff. Also, as well as being poisonous to them, the grit is immensely irritating when it gets stuck in their pads. This irritation can cause large sores and potential loss of part of their leg. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Similar care should be exercised towards hedgehogs on bonfire night - loads get burnt to death where they have nested in the base of the fire.

              Thanks too!

Bird advice - DON'T give them any non-solid fat (ie oil) as it makes their feathers unwaterproofed when they fluff through them with their beaks (sorry about grammer!)

And don't put gasoline in the bird bath even if it is visited by petrels.

As a big animal lover, its my pleasure to bring it to posters attention.
Personally I would like to hear the COUNCILS or the RSPCA telling folk. Our local animal shelter has posted CARE FOR 4 LEGS leaflets through our door about keeping our pets safe in this bad weather, including let the dog stay in the kitchen if it is an outside dog. (Why keep a non working dog outside anyway.. just dont get it!)

Golden Rule: I it's too cold where I go, it's too cold for Fido!

OH and while i think on it please dont do what my neighbour did, being kind hearted, and give a cat hot milk to warm her up!!!

My (cat-less) house is at present full or wrens. First of all I thought I was cracking up (movement spotted at periphery of vision etc) but then caught the eye of one of them. They're really really tiny and cute and determined (and not in the slightest bit afraid). I am assuming (ours is an old farmhouse and not spotless) that they will be able to scavenge a living safely in here whilst it's cold?
