Re: If a bat...

the ball and bat are £1.10
the ball costs £1 more than the ball.. that makes the ball 10p to me, cos £1.10 -£1 = 10p.. why are we dividing the 10 by 2?

Re: If a bat...

It also works as £1 for bat and 10p ball. Take 10p away from the £1.10 = £1. for the bat making this exactly £1. more than the ball. Both answers could be right IMHO

I don't know where the 2 balls come from, but, the bat is £1 more than the ball, so if the ball is 10p, then the bat is only 90p more than the ball. You take the £1 away from the equation cause you know the bat has to be , then you divide whats left and you get a ball at 5p.

So the ball is 5p
The bat is £1.05
That equals £1.10

Meaning the bat is £1 more than the ball.

The clue here is the "£1 more than the ball", so whatever you have to pay for the ball you have to pay for the bat plus £1.

As in, if I have £1 and you have £11, that means you have £10 more than me
.

Re: If a bat...

Going to have trouble with Tutts & Puffrose I can see---lol

Tutts-this is maths--there is only one answer--as you know--I don't deal in grey--just black and white--lol

With all due respect---you are not concentrating on the fact that the "Bat is £1 more than the ball"-----so when you say the ball is 10p and the bat is £1--that equates to the bat being 90p more than the ball (£1-10p)

See my revised Spreadsheet where I posted a few different values for ball and bat
The only line where the bat is £1 more than the ball is the RED LINE
If you say bat is £1 and ball 10p-the value in cell J4 (YELLOW LINE) is 90p

Another way of looking at it Puff

Lets say you give 2 of your kids 5p each to spend
Youngest buys a ball at 5p
Oldest wants a bat-so he chivies you until you give him another pound for the bat--making £1.10 you have given them
Youngest chimes up " Mum--his bat cost £1 more than my ball--its not fair
If I was still at school-(50 years ago-lol)---I would use "Simultaneous Equations and set it out as below--but please-I'm not trying to teach grandmothers to suck eggs for those that know-lol

Let x = a ball
Let y = a bat

Equation 1--x + y =110
Equation 2--y -x =100

Taking equation 2--by moving a term to the opposite side (and using normal algebra to also change the sign)-we get
Equation 3--y = 100 + x

NOW we substitute the value of y from equation 3 into equation 1
Which gives us
x + 100 + x = 110 Then we move the 100 to the other side-changing its sign as we go--this gives us
x + x = 110 - 100
therefore
2x = 10 which simpifies to
x = 5

SO Ball is 5p and bat is £1.05

Re: If a bat...

i dont understand how 1.10 - 1 can work out as anything but .10. *goes to bury head in the nearest sand dune*

if i go to tesco and buy a cake at £1 and a kids chocolate bar at 10p it works out at £1.10 and if i take the £1 theres 10p left..

Im too fik for algebra, my math is i have £10 n my pocket, my shopping costs £9.50 i have enough money.

Hey Turbs, no trouble with me, I know that if you have 100 more than me it means you have 100 plus the amount I have. I just have a more simplistic way of getting my result.
