  • Money saving tips

    Hey all,

I recently came in to the possesion of my late mother in laws book, with al her tips recipies and how tos. This is pre war gold!!

I'll start off with a few of her tips and ideas, and if you have any, feel free to contribute!

    Lets start with household goods

Polish: Why buy expensive furniture polish when the following can do exactly the same thing?
Brass (doorknobs etc) Brown sauce applied with a duster, then rubbed off with a clean duster makes all metalwork shine!

Windows... windolene anyone? Dont bother, buy some white vinegar and put it on newspaper, clean said windows with that and lose the smell by leaving a peeled orange on the windowsill.

Cold in the winter? grab a pair of tights and start stuffing them with all the clothes the kids have grown out of, cut at the waist to make 2 long snakes, sew shut and you have 2 perfect draught exculders!

    Recipie:

    sunday dinner on a budget!

Change your lump of topside of beef for a bigger joint of brisket.

Place brisket joint in a oven proof pan, with lid, and cover with onions leeks carrots etc, add some rosemary, thyme and a little parsley, cover this in a enough gravy to cover the joint, put in the oven at about gas3, lowest electric you have, and forget it for about 6 hours. after this time add your potatos (unboiled) to the pan and forget for about an hour, when you take the joint out of the oven and untie it, it will fall to peices and you will never look at topside again!!

    Saving money on bills.

    personal experience here!!!

No company wants to lose business, so when your contracts with them run out, its worth asking what they will offer you to stay! lets be honest, you dont actually owe the company much do you?

    Mobile phones:

in the last 30 days of your contract (call provider and ask for an upgrade date) you can ring up and listen to the offers the company make you DONT accept them unless you are very satifisfied with them, say you would like a PAC code as other companies have better offers and ask to go through to Retentions. They can offer discounts on your contract (I know i was a retentions advisor for 3 years pre baby no 3). If your actual phone handset works ok, ask about the Sim only packages (ex with phone £25, 18months, 300mins, 200 texts nothing else Sim only same deal £15 but you are only tied in for 1 month!)

even if you dont shop with them, Asda do a price checker, you can see where the cheapest deals are at the click of a button! Lose your pride, ok Mrs Snootyladeeda next door comes home with Fortnum and masons bags, you know inside the foods marked ICELANDS like the rest of us!!!

    School dinners
In the summer when its nice, send the kids in with a packed lunch, let them have hot dinners in the winter when its cold!

Car Insurance, DONT automatically accept your renewal with your exsisting company, use comparrison sites, dont worry about these ones that say we dont use comparrison sites.. they are 5 times more expensive!!

Warm Front, contact them about your insulation, there is a government grant where even home owners (as long as you get your tax credits) can get cavity wall and loft insulation done free!

Todays hint from the Book Of Wonders:
Avoiding Waste (this is pre 1950s remember)

          Scrap Pie.

          take an oven proof dish

Take leftover cooked meats, ham/pork (all you could get in wartime im told.. change meats to suit whats in the fridge) finely chop a leek, carrots, parsnips, whatever precooked veggies you have left, add this to the dish, cover in gravy, cover in sliced preboiled potatoes making a lid.

bake in a medium oven until the lid is golden,

Save electricity, when the little ones have had their baths, hang all the damp washing in the bathroom and let the steam "iron" them!

Latest installment.. and i made these today

            Jammy toffee

            you need: greaseproof paper
            fruit jam

smear layers of fruit jam on to the greaseproof paper, place in a meduim oven, cook for 25-30 mins and allow to cool, chill in the fridge and you have cheap, tasty sweets
