  • Student discount?????

As some of you might know, I'll be starting my OU course in Feb.
A couple of days ago i received an application for a grant for a computer and internet access.
£250 for comp and £140 for internet. I was wondering, can part time students get discounts? and any ideas where i can get a brand new lappy as high a psec as possible at the best price possible?

    Re: Student discount?????

There was a card that you could get through the OU that acts as a NUS student discount card for some places, or there was when I was doing my degree. Worth having a nose round the website and First Class or whatever its called these days (the student forum type thingy)

Also there are sometimes adverts in the OU paper that they send out (can't remember what that was called either!)

Bear in mind it was about 3 or 4 years ago that I had to give up the week before my summer school and havent been back since, just don't have the time.

    So what you studying?

By the way where are you based? its just that I know a great compy shop in Burnley, got my lappy from there last year, its an Acer 5003, with crystalbrite screen, dvd re writer and all sorts of gumph, got 60 gig hard drive etc. It was about 450. They usually got some good stuff on good prices.

It's called P3 computers, have a look see at the website, great aftersales service too. We won't go anywhere else now, in the past few years everyone has had a lappy from them (so that's 5 lappys) and they custom built the other half's pc for him. And the staff are lovely

thanks for that, I'll have a nosey around the OU site and do some googling.

I'll be starting my Bachelor of laws degree 1st year.

I can also apply for a grant for study material, also for £250 which can also go towards a computer but wont get that until the course has started

Posted at the same time....I based in coalville, leicestershire.

Well if you don't get it till Feb then it may be worth hanging on till the new year when there will be some cracking bargains to be found.

I was doing a BSc in maths (wasn't one of the named degrees, but cos it was all in maths/stats it was a BSc) Ex husband dying the week before summer school didn't help!

              sorry to hear about that.

I could get the grant for comp before Feb and another grant for books and stuff after it's started. so £250 for comp, + £140 for internet plus another £250 for materials but I' could use £500 of it for comp instead.
I have no idea how much I will need for study material.

As you say, I will probably wait till the sales anyway.

If you check out the student section of the site then you may be able to pick the set books up second hand. Most of the other material comes through to you (unless they have changed things)

                Oh and thanks x
