From my local paper this morning:
An 84-year-old former boxer has told how he floored a mugger wielding a 10in "commando style" knife with a "Henry Cooper hammer".
Peter Sandy landed a left hook on the would-be robber’s nose after he was ambushed in Colville Road, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge,
Peter Sandy
Heroic Mr Sandy, who has suffered two heart attacks and been burgled twice in the last two years, had popped out for a pint of milk when the thug demanded cash at about 10.30pm on Wednesday.
The country and western singer, whose stage name is Jedediah Sands, said: “He had this big knife and he pushed it towards me and said: ‘Give me the money or I’ll cut you.’ Instinct just kicked in. I feinted and gave him a left hook – a Henry Cooper hammer.
“He fell to the ground bleeding and then he ran off. I went home and called the police in the morning. I didn’t fancy going to the station at that time of night.
“It wasn’t brave. I think any boxer would have done the same thing. I am not an aggressive man. Training just took over.”
And it’s not the first time the great grandfather, who tours France playing country and western music, has shown courage.
In September a judge dropped a speeding charge against him because he was rushing his terminally ill friend to hospital.
He was snapped travelling just seven miles above a 30mph limit along Elizabeth Way, Cambridge, as David Burton, who suffers from throat cancer, lay choking on the back seat.
The Colville Road resident pleaded guilty at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court to the speeding charge and faced losing his licence after racking up nine points. But district judge Ken Sheraton upheld Mr Sandy’s explanation of “life and death” extenuating circumstances and dropped the charge.
And police have praised the former soldier in the Royal Artillery, where he learned his boxing skills, for facing up to the mugger.
Det Con Sam Constable said: “The victim was scared and reacted instinctively and bravely by punching the robber.
“I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to consider whether they saw this happen or the mugger leaving the scene.”
The robber is described as white, slim, 18 to 20, with short dark hair, and wearing a light jacket with a dark collar turned up, dark trousers and white trainers.
