Re: What is she on about

No Bankworkers get commission for upgrading/upselling an account. However, they are targetted for their BONUS. Remember the next big misselling thing is Packaged accounts and it's a lot harder to disprove.

I should add that I sometimes get calls to tell me about this fantastic service that such and such provider has got to which I state the obvious: If it costs anything more, I am not interested.

I have however received a letter from my bank(unsigned) to go in for a financial review. I am tempted to take up the offer if they are providing a cup of tea and biscuits cos they will get absolutely nothing out of me.

In the meantime the queue is getting longer, there is probably only one or two windows open and people are getting frustrated as all they want to do is pay in or draw out etc.

          Exactly, Sapphire!
It's the same in the Post Office now. I was in the other day and the queue was to the door while a cashier was having a bonus day selling an elderly lady everything she could think of.(In between discussions about the weather, her daughter in Australia, etc etc!!)
I only wanted to post a registered parcel, but when I eventually got to the front:
Can I send this registered please?
          Well, what value is it?
          £50
Do you know registered only covers you up to £41? Would you like extra insurance?
          No thanks its fine
WE can't guarantee next day delivery with Registered, with Special delivery we can guarantee next day. Would you like Special Delivery?
          How much is it?
          £8.40
          How much is Registered?
          Errrm £4.75
          Registered is fine thanks!

          (Stern look)

Do you need any extra stamps?

I felt like whipping out a gun and shouting JUST POST THE PARCEL, LADY!!!!

On the Post office flogging stuff note, I mentioned this a while ago as a good % of the sub posties wages is from commission.
My dad (85) has been collared twice now in the PO to take on their phone/BB deal and has actually agreed it, although he has no idea what BB is. I have had a job and a half to get these deals cancelled for him because of DPA etc, I fully intended to make an official complaint about it but it slipped my mind with other things going on.
I myself was asked "was I going to NZ this year"? because I was posting my xmas cards to family there. When I replied "No" the postie said "Oh because I could have sold you some travel Ins" may hell freeze over first cheeky git lol.

If the Government promise to set up a fair, open to all Post Office Bank Account had been honoured the staff wouldn't be struggling so much to earn commission. I'm gutted about that, I was waiting for it..would have been an ideal parachute account.

Re: What is she on about

This aggresive upselling is, unfortunately, prevalent almost everywhere in our society.

Most companies have had management or sales consultants in, who then go on to inform that every contact with a customer should be taken as an opportunity to sell.

You cannot escape it, if you make a call to anyone, BT or other phone provider, insurance company, bank, you are 'upsold', go to Burger King you are asked if you want to 'go large', even at WHSmith when buying a newspaper you are accosted at the counter on whether you want a £1 bar of Dairy Milk.

Now as it happens I do have a packaged account with Natwest (sorry Leclerc!) but this is because I really do use almost all the benefits it offers and it worked out cheaper than taking them seperately elsewhere. However when I do my financial reviews if this turns out the other way then I will cancel it like a shot.

But these 'value added' services as they are called unfortunately are everywhere. This is because companies understand that to sell to an existing customer is far easier than trying to sell to a new one.

I do wonder though, for how long. People are becoming far more aware, and cautious, of these tactics, hence why companies are becoming more aggresive in their selling methods (particularly in the current economic climate), and I wonder whether there will be a consumer backlash against it.

Just my tuppeny thoughts this lunchtime!
