Sorry their holiday was trashed but apparently holidaymakers are at more risk of catching an infection on cruise ship holidays than any other vacation. This is because they are bundled in together for a couple of weeks with hygene, water quality and air ventilation issues on these ships. Not to mention sick passengers being aboard and spreading germs around! I always think aieroplanes are dodgy for that as well; 6 hours for example in an air ventilated tube with some blokes coughing his guts up or sneezing during the flight.

    Googled this:

In 2002, a wave of gastroenteritis outbreaks occurred aboard several international cruise ships, turning the sojourns of many sea-bound, sun-revelers into shortened trips they would most likely want to forget. As recently as February 2004, more than 300 Carnival Cruise Line ship passengers were stricken with the stomach malady while aboard the Celebration luxury liner while on a Valentine's cruise in Mexico. Unfortunately, such outbreaks are not a surprise to the industry. According to a 2003 World Health Organization (WHO) study, "Emerging Issues in Water and Infectious Disease," since 1970 over 100 disease outbreaks associated with cruise ships have been documented. The WHO considers this figure low, because many such illnesses go unreported.
However, MM, I hasten to add that the prospect of a luxury cruise is not terribly likely for me at present!

Even if I could afford to go on one the thought of a cruise holds no interest for me.

Quite happy to stay at home with easy access to family, doctors and hospitals and local shops----and my own bed and bathroom! [and PC!]

As I get older the closer I move to being a hermit!

You are certainly right with flying, we recently travelled 12 hours each way to and from Shanghai. The majority of the passengers were from china or there abouts and the coughing and spluttering that went on was ridiculous. The only thing you can do is wear a mask for the journey.
