Because sometimes I would like to make 2 distinct posts.
One to answer/respond to one person. The next to respond separately to someone else.
As a matter of courtesy I would sometimes prefer to respond to people individually in a separate post.
On a matter of practicality, if someone is trying to respond to one comment in a post that has been merged from a few replies, then they will have to faff around removing all the irrelevant stuff from other auto-merged posts so it is clear what they are replying to.
I can see it may have benefits in some circumstances, but in most it is just an annoyance and perhaps even an impediment.
Just my opinion you understand. I'm used to forums where it doesn't happen.
And I can count the number of times that I have thought posts should be "merged" on those I admin/mod on a single hand.
It doesn't do anything to help, but may possibly detract.
