What is that smell.....?

Ok I give up I need help. This is driving me mad!!!

Under my stairs is the strangest smell, at first I assumed it must be cat pee,bit odd as my cats have never peed in the house always outside. So I took every thing out from under the stairs ripped out the carpet (brought a scrubbing brush) and scrubbed the heck out of the floor boards, skirting board and walls. I then sprayed everything with that cat pee eliminator stuff. Repeated again the next day.


1 week later the smell is back and stronger... couldn't see any cat pee or cat pee marks but scrubbed everything again and sprayed again. I had a serious headache by the time I was finished.
This time I blocked off the area so they couldn't do it again....

2 days later and the smell is even stronger than before I don't know what it is, it cant be cat pee as they can't get under there now

Its starting to permeate through the whole house now it stinks HELP!!!!

All that is currently under the stairs is the gas mains, electric meter and water softener....

Couple of wires, some pipes and lots of dust

Well i thought maybe a dead rat or mouse maybe.
Could it be damp or rot?

I thought that too I ripped the floor boards up at 5am this morning lol


The gas man thought there was an odd smell a few months a go and we had the emergency gas people out (they arrived in 8 mins - quicker than an ambulance lol) and they replaced all the gas stuff. I couldn't smell anything then but there is most definitely a smell now.

Dont think any mould I would have scrubbed it all away in my last few frantic cleaning sessions if there were.

I dont know about rot...how would I know?

Think the only way is to get a man who would in, just ask to have a look and give a quote least you'll find out what it is.

Is the wall an adjoining wall to next door, if so it could be something coming through from them the otherside.

This may sound an obscure question but................have you noticed many ants or other insects in the house recently?

Ammonia I think, thats why I thought it was cat pee.

Nope semi detached on the detached side, no smell outside at all.

just dismantled the water softner to see if it was that...now can't put the bloody thing back together FFS just found out call out fee is £136 plus VAT...bugger

Rofl I forgot to suggest BT ! Seriously though they pay their bills and council tax so why not call them all out and get it sorted, in fact Mocha could say she's concerned it could be a health hazard that should liven them up a bit.
