Kent had three different cancers, the first one was in remission and no evidence of it coming back. The Lung Cancer terminal and inoperable, but being him,, decided life goes on and if the NHS was only offering bog standard treatment, he was going to give them a shake up and by golly he did. We had to fight to get the Tarceva prescribed and this should be the first line treatment not second line. the primary tumour was gone after we did our way and not theirs and the Tarceva was prescribed to mop up any stray cells and it was working. After I had my hip op, four weeks into recovery Kent came down with jaundice, which led to the discover of Pancreatic cancer in the head of pancreas. This is a deadly cancer, but as fate had it Tarceva will help this type of cancer and in the States, they have success with it shrinking the tumour. we know it was shrinking, because Kent was starting to eat more, but of course a 12 days before he died, he came down with gastro enteritis. He just did not have the strength to deal with this as the Tarceva had impaired his immune system. Kent just deteriorated so rapidly and as his oncologist says he has re-written the medical text books regarding the treatment of 'supposed' terminal lung cancer. Kent's death has not been in vain. lesson have been learnt by the medical profession regarding bog standard treatments offered and the one thing I know, you have to stand your ground, do not accept what is offered, research and challenge and then ask for second and third opinions. Get the scans and everything else and do not be afraid to seek treatment elsewhere.
I am now involved in the research for the NZ Navy Association on cancers in the such small group of personnel. Of course I am still involved in the campaign to get Tarceva prescribed on the NHS for all who need, instead of a post code lottery, otherwise it is only available if you are able to self fund. I have gone through the expense of all three cancers and let's put it this way, we could have bought two more houses in this area.
Never accept what you are told. Be prepared to make them listen to you and do not let them talk to you in a patronizing fashion.
The NHS needs the same consumer revolution as the banks are experiencing.
In saying that, there are some excellent doctors and nurses. I could not have managed the last week of Kent's life, without our fantastic District Nurses, HALO Nurses and the Marie Curie Nurses. Please note I did not mention MacMillan. The biggest disappointment we have ever encountered. I know MacMillan have done a lot of good for many people, but for us, they were NEVER there when needed in the last 20 months. I will no longer be supporting them.
