OFT seeks views on its priorities for 2011-12
The Office of Fair Trading is seeking views on its priorities for 2011-12. We welcome your views to ensure that we allocate our resources - which will reduce by 25 per cent over four years - to issues that matter most to consumers and the economy.
Good consumer outcomes rely on competitive markets providing choice and value, whilst vibrant competition relies on consumers shopping with confidence. We will continue to take a holistic approach to our work, analysing markets from both a consumer and a competition angle.
The priority areas we propose focusing on are important to the performance and growth of the UK economy and quality of life for UK consumers. They are: economic infrastructure sectors, online markets, high innovation markets and public services markets. Protecting vulnerable consumers, including in consumer credit markets, and markets which may be impacted by commodity price rises are also proposed priority areas of our work.
We consider that high impact enforcement to achieve compliance with competition and consumer law should be a key theme to our work, and we will work to ensure that we maximise the deterrence effect of our enforcement activities. Alongside this we aim to influence and change the behaviour of businesses, consumers and Government where appropriate to make markets work well.
As the Government considers changes to the competition and consumer landscape we will continue to effectively deliver those functions that may transfer out of the OFT to secure the best outcomes for consumers and the economy.
