ICO consults on new changes to the Data Protection Register
The ICO is currently inviting stakeholders to take part in a consultation looking at proposed changes to the ICO's Data Protection Register. The ICO is required by law to make the register available for inspection and does so via its website. The changes will allow people to download the content of the register in its entirety, in a reusable format. While there will be some benefits to this approach, there will also be some data protection considerations due to a number of entries on the register relating to specific individuals, including sole traders.

New, speedier process for handling subject access request complaints introduced
The ICO typically receives around 60 complaints each week concerning organisations who have failed to respond to subject access requests within the legal time frame of 40 calendar days.
To deal with this more efficiently the ICO has introduced a speedier complaints handling system.
Instead of writing to the organisation involved and providing them with a set time limit - normally 28 days - to respond, the ICO has now set up a process which will see the majority of subject access complaints handled over the telephone. In future, once the ICO has ruled that a subject access request is legitimate, the organisation must respond immediately unless they confirm that they had never received the original request. This should greatly speed up the time in which most complaints are resolved.
Letters are now being sent to organisations that have received a subject access complaint in the past year to inform them of the changes.
