Mind reveals shocking new evidence about the impact a visit from the bailiffs can have on mental health.
One of the UK's leading mental health charities, Mind, have released figures on the impact of bailiffs on mental health from a survey carried out earlier this year. The charity are concerned that in the current economic climate and as more and more people find it difficult to keep up with their bills the use of bailiffs will increase, and they are calling on the Government to act on its commitment to protect the public from aggressive bailiffs and urgently introduce robust regulation of the profession.
Amongst findings, the survey showed:
The previous Government had previously committed to introducing regulation in 2012 by the Security Industry Authority; the same body which covers bouncers and wheel clampers. However, Mind is concerned this body is not strong enough to stamp out bad practice. Leading bailiff companies and trade associations have also called for independent regulation of the bailiff industry to address bad practice by disreputable companies.

- 50% of people reported suicidal feelings after a knock on the door from bailiffs;
- 96% reported increased levels of anxiety after a visit from bailiffs and 87% reported increased levels of depression;
- 80% had experienced threatening behaviour;
- Over 65% were subjected to aggressive behaviour; and
- 74% felt it had a negative impact on their family.
