Cutting straight to the point, my partner and I stole a £19.99 baby tree from outside a well known shop yesterday. He was seen picking it up by 2 members of staff and watched me follow him. ( one member of staff then told the whole store as soon as she could). The cctv pointing outside ,from inside the store, obviously caught it too. Thing is, it happened so fast, having a laugh about it and pretending to egg each other on. I followed him and panicked, got in our van and drive away. Partially in shock. We get home, have a massive argument and I called the store. Did I mention I worked in this store for the last 4 years!! ( left last sept) So i know everyone who works there very well.
I explain to the male member of staff that saw, who I WAS very good friends with what happened. He said come back tmrw morning and pay for it though did say he'd have to pass it on to management. I was expecting that So it went as well as it could.
So today, I didn't go. I couldn't do it. Not slept all night/day today. even now ( and no one could make me feel worse than I do.) My emotions have been all over the place. Had a panic attack through stress, embarrassment of seeing all those people who knew what happened. I've been in bits and never done anything like this before. Ever.
I then get the manager call me. Straight to the point as I thought. 12 month ban. (Expected.) I said I'd spoken to the other staff member last night and i offered to pay for it or I could bring it back or both and what happened and why. Apologised for our stupid behaviour.
He told me it doesn't work like that any more and it would go to civil recovery. Even if I brought it back AND paid for it. I've also just started a new job in retail and we may be put on some retail register?? Will my new employers see this???
I really need advice. I thought if i spoke to him it wouldn't go any further. ( 4 years working together means nothing.) and the fact I called them up when i got home to sort it out. One mess up. Yea it's not a tiny one and he has to do his job but there you go.
Anyone have any advice or dealt with civil recovery before. We're happy to pay for what we done but we are on a low income and I'm expecting a really big fine through the post and losing my new job.
Can I take it back to the shop when they're closed and give it to the night staff with
Our names on it and maybe the £20 too?? Take pics as proof.
I don't know what to do for the best.
What's the letter that I'm going to receive be like? Will it be a big fine?
Any advice greatfully received.
Thank you.
