US President Barack Obama is in the UK to impose the “toxic” Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) deal on Britain, a move which will allow US firms to demolish the state health system and more besides, War on Want warns.
The British NGO has branded Obama’s official visit as the forward edge in an imperialist-style fight to make sure the UK, and Europe more broadly, accept the principles of TTIP.
Critics of the plan say the negotiations have largely been carried out in a secretive and undemocratic way and TTIP would effectively crack open Europe for big US firms by removing a range of regulations.

They fear that private data, public services, food safety standards and even democracy itself could be threatened by the unaccountable power of big US capital.
War on Want said the deal is meeting with widespread resistance across the continent, with the French threatening to terminate talks and public approval plummeting in Germany.
“TTIP is an unpopular, anti-democratic stitch-up,” War on Want Senior Trade Campaigner Mark Dearn said in a statement.
“If President Obama truly believes in democracy he should forget about forcing this dodgy deal on the people of Europe.”
In an article for the political blog Left Foot Forward, Labour MEP Jude Kirton-Darling warned that proponents of TTIP must “acknowledge that this is inherently a delicate process, and that the end goal is precisely to shift the balance between what is up for trade and what isn’t.”

She said no referendum was required “to know that citizens have red lines: no weakening of food safety, health or labor standards, no infringements on democratic rights or attacks on public services.”
“Such an important decision simply cannot be taken against the public’s will,” she said.
The UK government denies that food safety, sovereignty, public services or democracy will be infringed upon, claiming that “a successful and ambitious TTIP could boost the UK economy by as much as £10 billion [US$14 billion], and benefit the EU economy by up to £100 billion.”

I have always believed that if you supply a good product then there will be a demand. We won't buy trains from bombardier but prefer to go to Japan, we will not buy steel for the new rail link or steel for the new forth bridge from the uk which I think begins to say it all. How can we say our products are saleable when we show no interest ourselves its like being a salesman for Jaguar but having a BMW as a company car.

Obama is still a powerful man and will be in office for 6 months after the referendum, also hopefully his party will still be in the White House afterwards, either that or the man who think that corner shops are terrorists ( That's 7/11's by the way)

The US President is a 'real' leader and by that I mean his powers are not ceremonial like our Queen in the UK Constitution. The President's powers are similar to Her Majesty's Government. Obama is on the one hand head of state but on the other hand, he is a leader of a thriving economy and economic powerhouse on the global scene. The US economy is approx. 14 trillion the world's largest economy, relative this the UK's which is a mere 1-2 trillion at best. So, the President has to look after his country's business economic interests.

Now, the US health system is an all together different creature to the UK's NHS system insofar as its 0.3 billion/ 0.03 trillion (300 mill.) population weighs heavily on the US' heath resources. Obama's administration has in effect simply nationalised a private health system which was mainly based on US employee benefits, ie the benefit relating to health followed the person in employment, with exceptions in that each state covers those who have no 'medical insurance.'

Notwithstanding, it costs approx. $3-400, 000 to put a US medical student graduate through medical school, those medical professionals also have arbitrary medical targets by the government, plagued with lawsuit claims from the 'ambulance chasing' US law firms. The US law degree is set at post graduate and it costs a small fortune compared to the UK's education equivalent. So, the outcome is that the US system is grossly unfair for many, it could be said. When the UK politicians, usually the out of touch Tories, use USA analogies for the UK's comparison it really is erroneous owing to the differences in their economy types. However, the UK merely has 20% of the US population so its economy can cope with a national health system. Privatisation always leads to winners (big firms 'jobs for the boys') and losers, guess who'll be the losers?

The supply of products must be equal to the demand.. or you'll have over-supply, ie too many products and not enough purchasing. Under supply of products means the products will likely be too expensive.

When there is over supply ie too much choice, inferior products fall by the wayside and better products survive unless there are un fair advantages placed within the market place. As shown China is funding their own steel to make the rest of the worlds un-competitive. Apparently we cant work around that due to trade deals and we won't buy british due to cost, how costly would it be to lose the steel industry especially on an island nation who has to upset other countries by trying to sort out their problems for them. The costs differences are from different budgets ie the budget for building road and rails opposed to keeping businesses alive and employment so we save on one to cost more on another. We have a demand for these products or we wouldn't be looking to purchase them, if we don't buy Japanese or Chinese they struggle a bit more but we keep ourselves employed.
