Hi my daughter done something very stupid. She stole £18 worth of stuff from a shop. The police came asked her questions they never asked her to go to police station just took her name ect... she's been getting letters from RLP I've been reading on here some people ignore them! She has to pay £150 back. Can someone help me please will my daughter have to go to court if she doesn't pay? Will the police be called? She's never done this before! I'm so worried.

Re: worried!
Keep ignoring the letters!! She DOESN'T have to pay rlp anything!! There will be no court case, no (more) police, only begging letters from rlp

Re: worried!
Hi welcome to LB,
RLP has nothing to do with the courts or the police, this company
issues speculative invoices in an attempt to " recover" losses incurred
by the retailer.
Were the items returned to the store undamaged and fit for resale?
Others no doubt will have an input on this.

Rlp tend to send "scary" letters to those who could be seen as vulnerable. They threaten court action (which they can't do as it has to be the retailer that does that) ... they try to pressure people in to paying their jumped up "charges" (when they have no right to). And IMO they need stopping!!
Have a read through this thread (http://www.legalbeagles.info/forums/...highlight=Sonu) to see the type of letter that rlp send ... and our advice on them
Above all, try not to worry  You'll get lots of help and support here :grouphug:Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

Re: worried!
No she wasn't arrested they just asked her name ect..they where very nice about it and phoned up the station she doesn't have a criminal record. The letter says ignoring this matter will not make it go away and they can take you to court! The pay pass this information on to the police! I just don't know what to do? Should she ignore this or pay?

Thank you Kati you have been a big help! I have seen it and it is very scary what they say about going to court. So she should just ignore this and hopefully go away. £150 is a bit dear

This is nothing to do with loss or costs in reality just a money making scam.

Sorry for the shouting, but rlp are not my favourite subject  ... they prey on the weak and vulnerable to fund their "business" and are not worth bothering with! If your daughter tries talking/appealing to them it makes them think they're onto a 'winner', ignore them and they go away (after a few letters) xx

Re: worried!
Can only repeat the advice given..
To clarify slightly: the court they refer to is the civil court, (not the criminal) where they threaten to sue for their imagined losses.
Last time they did this they were heavily slated by the judge, and haven't tried since!
The series of letters from RLP will continue for sometime (upto 9 months even!) and may include letters from debt collectors (which also be should ignored) and even a letter offering a reduced penalty amount (by this time they are becoming desperate for any donations!)
Just ignore unless by some error she does receive proper sealed court papers (and these haven't been seen for years)

Re: worried!
Sorry, I missed this earlier.
Well, they say you never stop being a parent no matter how old the child! Naturally you are worried about your daughter but honestly this will be ok. If you have a good browse through similar posts (Just search RLP) you will discover this bunch of chancers are depending on the threatening tone of their letters to, well, practically extort money out of people. Kati, Nemesis and Des are clever beagles and their advice has helped many a tortured person through a crisis.
OK, your daughter may have done something wrong but I think she knows that. To be honest if, after 27 years, this is the worst thing she has ever done then she is not too bad and you have been a good mother. If this is a once off then there is nothing to worry about really. I know many parents who have had visits from the police because their school aged children have been terrorising the neighbourhood and I have just been looking at a case where a young teenage girl smacked an old woman in the face. Countless school children have been caught swiping sweets from shops and though it is never acceptable I think you need to step back and look at this in relation to what other parents have had to deal with. Unlike you however many parents don’t seem to give two hoots what their kids are up to. You have a good daughter and she has a good mum. Big hugs to both of you, now move on and continue to enjoy the obviously close relationship you have.
An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after 50 floors says, 'So far so good'!
