  • A new Scam?

I have just had a phone call from 'talktalk' (who were until 2 months ago my ISP) . I was told that they had found infections on my computer. I just said thats odd as I am not with talktalk to which he tried to find out who I was with.

Is this just a new version of the windows helpdesk scam?

Certainly sounds like it. Had one from some scamming moron purporting to be from 'Virgin media' the other day, which was certainly that scam.

I had one recently on the landline (asked for the previous tenant) who said he was from 'microsoft' ... I 'toyed' with them for a bit before admitting that we have 3 linux Pc's and an old Apple Mac

They usually ask you to download something to give them 'remote access' to your PC

Same here, but it's 1 linux PC and 3 linux laptops.

I must admit I do like winding these up if I have the time. Kept one going round in circle for nearly an hour once. Was very upset when I told him I had to end the call as I now had something I needed to do, but I had enjoyed winding him up, and by doing so prevented him from scamming someone else during that time.

A couple of years ago they rang someone's elderly parents, who were going to be charged £120 to fix the alleged problems by "Microsoft". To that effect they provided bank details but were saved by their own inadequacies, the account number was wrong!

This is DEFINIATELY a scam. Its very convincing because they often can quote your talktak account number and other details. The talk talk systems were hacked last november.

Thanks for the info about talktalk being hacked. I did wonder if it was just a coincidence , you know how you get emails from banks you have never had an account with , but luckily I am no longer with talktalk. The other thing that added supposed authority is that we all know where talktalk call centres are and the person calling could easily have been in said country

Just for information. If you get to hear of anyone who has paid for the "Microsoft Support Desk" then get them to get the charge on their card reversed. The banks seem to be only to happy to do this.

If I have time I love just winding them up. Longest so far is 40 minutes. I did suggest to one that if he was in Calcutta to find that big black hole and jump in it. I'm trying to get permission from the wife to have another computer to hand so that I can let them take over that machine.

Permission from the wife-don't you have her chained to the sink?
