As some of you may know the Government has withdrawn the grant it had been giving Bailii and Bailii is now in serious financial difficulty/embarrassment (see link below). I am told the situation is absolutely critical if it does not secure funds soon. As some of you my recall TeCSA has previously sponsored Bailii and most of us make great use of it.
For those of you who are not familiar with it, Bailii is a free database of case reports and the TCC judges post onto it very regularly. The transcripts are very usable, the search tools are really good and the cases are grouped together by reference to the Courts in question. Unlike any other resource it is possible to use this database to "follow" what is going on in the TCC for example.
I gather that because Bailii used to have support from the government, which has now been cut, it has never had to appeal for funds and it is quite bad at it. However, it has appealed for help.
Bailii serves a really important function at keeping down the subscription costs that we all have to pay for likes of Butterworths, Westlaw and LexisNexis etc. Every law firm (and chambers) and in-house lawyer has something to bargain with - because they have access to this free database. I think it is very likely that if Bailii goes belly up, our subscriptions will go up. For this reason, it is really in our interests to keep this charity going. TeCSA has made a small donation, but I ask all those at their in house and in private practice to see if your firm or company can assist. It would be a great shame to lose it!
Thank you in anticipation.
