Appeal For Help Over Diesel Raid Death

    Updated:06:20, Tuesday June 24, 2008
Police investigating the death of a farmer's wife who disturbed diesel thieves on her land have made an urgent appeal to the public for help.

    The farm in Bishop Middleham

Rosemary Dove, 68, collapsed in her farmhouse shortly after dialling 999 to report that intruders were using a pump on their farm in Bishop Middleham, County Durham.
Meanwhile her son, James Michael Dove, suffered a double hip fracture when he tried to confront the thieves.
Detectives are now trying to trace the silver Mitsubishi-style pick-up truck used in the raid on Sunday night.

A helicopter search of the area has so far drawn a blank and officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in a bid to find witnesses.
DetChief Insp Paul Harker, leading the investigation said: "At this stage it's not clear exactly how many people were in the pick-up.
"We urgently need any help that will lead us to us to those involved in this tragic series of events, which have left the Dove family absolutely devastated."

Anyone who may have seen the pick-up truck, which had a distinctive amber lighting bar on the roof, is asked to call police on 0845 6060365 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The intruder spotted at the farm was described as white, of muscular build with short, dark brown hair and aged between 20 and 30 years old. He was wearing a check-style shirt.
Detectives said the vehicle was likely to have been quite badly damaged as it made a getaway across the farmer's fields.
Farmers' leaders said there had been a sharp increase in the theft of low tax red diesel - used for tractors and other agricultural machinery - from farms because of the big rise in forecourt prices

How very, very sad and I think there maybe a lot more incidents of this sort.
Maybe not leading to a death like this one, but who knows, we all defend our belongings it's just human nature.
