Court threat for 4p unpaid Council Tax

Sandwell Council offered the the debtor the opportunity to pay the sum off in instalments but was told if he did not start paying what he owed in seven days he would have to shell out the whole 4p.

I offered to pay the 4p but they said as a gesture of good will they would write it off.

Despite his anger, Mr Burke was still able to see the funny side.

He said: "I said I'd had a whip round at work and we were all really concerned. I offered to pay the 4p but they said as a gesture of good will they would write it off. It cost me £3 to get through!"
I'd be sending them a bill for £3 (plus court costs if they don't pay within 7 days)

I wonder if they will accept a debit card payment for 4p? This is bureaucracy gone mad and bureaucracy only ends in tears

This is why in public law there is a judicial view remedy where there has been a 'Wednesbury unreasonable', ie absurd decision from state decision-maker (ie includes the council): Associated Provincial Picture Houses Ltd v Wednesbury Corporation (1948)

Sorry , what have the two got to do with each other apart from the fact that Wednesbury is now covered by Sandwell.
